A St. Louis ethanol plant, still using the original boiler feed pumps installed in 2002, found itself in need of a more cost-effective solution. Both pumps were running non-stop around the clock, each requiring its own 40-horsepower motor. Output had dropped, sometimes running at only 225 gallons per minute (gpm) instead of the desired 250. Discharge pressure had also dropped, from 150 pounds per square inch (psi) to 125. Because it had already rebuilt both pumps twice, the company decided against more rebuild costs and opted to engage IPEG for a new solution.
IPEG, which offers a wide selection of pumps from leading manufacturers, installed a Grundfos CR45-7 with a low NPSHA first-stage impeller for this customer. Currently running one pump instead of two, the customer is enjoying:
- Output back to 250 gpm, with added flexibility to increase to 275 gpm, if needed
- Discharge pressure back to 150 psi
- Elimination of costs to run a 40-horsepower motor 24/7
- Near silent operation
When asked how the customer felt about the new installation, their response was merely “Why did we wait so long to do this?”
